Why fact-check?
I find and fix errors using my science writing and research expertise.
Fact-checking is vital to combatting misinformation. It helps publications catch inaccuracies and plagiarism, and boosts the credibility of journalistic works. And as a science writer, I know how important it is to get the facts right. I fact-check science media by meticulously combing through the details of a story and confirming that they can be backed up by records, data, and experts.
So, what is fact-checking?
Scientific fact-checking is like any other kind of fact-checking: I make sure any claims made in a piece of work can be verified. It works like this. First, you send me some words — like an article, a documentary script, or a podcast. Some clients annotate their story with sources ahead of time, which means my job is to check that the sources provided support the facts written. Other clients need help finding data to annotate their work, and I can do that, too.
Either way, if I find a mistake, I flag it with suggestions of how we can set the record straight.
